Speaking at a panel discussion dedicated to ‘Tourism: Safety and Security’ organised by the Indian Merchants Chamber, Subodh Jaiswal, Police Commissioner, Mumbai, urged tourism stakeholders in India to overcome the “chalta hai attitude” on matters of safety and security of tourists in India. Tourism in India has shown phenomenal growth in the past years and is considered to be the biggest driver to the nation’s economic growth. Along with the huge growth, security and safety of tourists has become a complex and vulnerable issue. Lack of safety and security, and incidences of crime represent a more serious threat to travel and tourism, than any other factor. “There is a need to invest in the training and development of stakeholders to make them realise that the ‘chalta hai attitude’ has to go for our own betterment. One single incident created by any of the stakeholders can cause heavy damage for the tourism industry”, said Jaiswal.

After markets like China and the UK, Indian hospitality chain OYO is looking at further expanding its international footprint with its foray into the Philippines, according to sources. The SoftBank-backed company, which ventured into international markets in 2016, already has a presence in the UK, the UAE, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Nepal. OYO has already onboard 10 properties and talks are on to add more locations at a quick pace, two people familiar with the company’s plans said.

The Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India (HRAWI) recently concluded its 13th Conclave of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’s (FSSAI) Food Safety Supervisor Training in Advance Catering in Mumbai. The programmes were conducted at The Emerald Hotel in Juhu and at the Institute of Hotel Management in Dadar respectively on October 10 and 12, respectively. Eighty hospitality professionals participated in the training sessions. As per the HRAWI release, the association has so far conducted a total of twenty-five Food Safety Training and Certification (FoSTaC) programmes through which 880 hospitality professionals have been trained and certified for the Western region.

The decision of restaurants and hotels in Ahmedabad to boycott leading online food delivery platforms Swiggy and Zomato has led to a 30% drop in their online deliveries, and yet they will continue the boycott, an industry association said. Hotel and Restaurant Association (Gujarat) (HRA) on Tuesday said it will not concede to the suggestion by the aggregators to increase food prices to absorb high commissions charged by Swiggy and Zomato. The industry body claimed that more than 500 restaurants and hotels have blacklisted Swiggy while many have boycotted Zomato for their poor business practices. It claimed that heavy commissions charged by the platforms had been choking off their profits.

Bengaluru-based GD Group has announced its major push into the hospitality sector with a plan to open as many as six properties by the end of 2019 under the brand name of Great Destinations Hotels and Resorts. The company chose to make a foray into the hospitality sector as the GD Group has a foundation rooted deep in services. It has ventures in retail, education and healthcare.
