‘Centralized UV purification ensures every drop of water being distributed in the hotel is pure, safe, and free of disease causing pathogens’

Alfaa UV, a company that is leading the industry in the design, manufacture and sale of a complete range of UV air & water purification systems in the country, has more than 1000 top hotel and restaurant chains using its application systems. Ankur Parikh, Director – Industrial UV, Alfaa UV, tells Odelle Amaral D’Silva about some of the pioneering work the company is engaged in and future, cost-effective applications for hotels.

Ankur ParikhQ. Tell us in brief about the latest in UV technology, as pertaining to the hotel sector. How is it an improvement on existing technology used by the hospitality industry this far?
A.There have beensignificant advancements in UV technology, especially in lamp technology and UV sizing. Using advanced simulation tools such as CFD have ensured that UV systems can be very effectively used in HVAC systems to not only dramatically improve indoor air quality but also to cut down on energy consumption by up to 30 per cent. New UV lamp technologies pioneered by Alfaa UV which work effectively in low temperature conditions have also greatly pushed the boundary in this field.

Q. What is the USP of your company?
A. Alfaa UV is one of the few companies in the world today which is totally focused on harnessing environmentally friendly ultraviolet technology to solve challenging environmental problems. Our active R&D team is constantly coming up with new and more efficient ways to tackle both water and airborne pollutants in a simple and cost effective way.

Q. Explain the various applications of this technology in the hospitality field
A.One of the most useful new applications which is being wholeheartedly embraced by the hospitality industry is that of centralized UV purification for the entire domestic water supply of the hotel. Recent improvement in the pressure handling capacity of Alfaa UV systems allow the UV system to be directly installed at the outlet of the hydroneumaticpumps in the domestic pumping systems. This ensures that every drop of water being distributed in the hotel is pure, safe, and free of disease causing pathogens. Guests can also safely drink water directly from any tap or faucet without worry. The cost to install such a system is miniscule and the benefits are tremendous.

UV is also very effective in replacing harmful and toxic chemicals such as chlorine in wastewater recycling, while at the same time making the water absolutely safe for use in landscaping, toilet flushing, and cooling tower makeup. A typical payback period for a hotel replacing chlorination with UV is less than 2 years. This is excluding the massive environmental benefits by stopping the use of a chemical like chlorine which has been proved to be carcinogenic.

Many hotels are adopting UV systems for swimming pools to cut down the amount of chlorine used while also protecting their swimmers against harmful pathogens such as cryptosporidium which are chlorine resistant. American and Europeans hotels are moving over to UV from ozone, due to the complexities and costs associated with maintaining an ozone treatment plant.

Finally, UV continues to be the best choice for point of use purifications applications such as ice cubing machines and water dispensers.

Ankur ParikhQ. Please share some details, statistics etc about how widespread or minimal has been the use of UV techology in hotels, restaurants etc till now as far as water recycling, air purification, swimming pools and general water purification is concerned
A.The most common use of UV is for drinking water purification and Alfaa UV alone have over 1,000 top hotels and restaurant chains in the country using our centralized and de-centralized water purification solutions.

UV in HVAC systems and swimming pools is gaining in popularity and Alfaa UV is doing pioneering work in these areas.

Q. Your company received the UN award recently. Kindly give us some details.
A.Our product PLatina, was judged the best UV purifier for residential use by Water Digest in association with UNESCO.

Q. Hotels and restaurants etc on the look out for more cost effective solutions for recycling as well as air/water purification needs. How can this technology and Alfaa UV address this?
A. A study done at a prominent five star hotel in India has demonstrated that by shifting over to an Ultraviolet disinfection technology, they were able to save over INR3 lacs per year and also contribute to a much safer environment. They were also able to achieve a much more reliable and consistent performance as the UV plant was fully automated and continuously provided feedback on its working to the hotel BMS system. In a day and age where getting skilled manpower is both a challenge and expensive, UV technology can greatly ease the stress.

Q. What future applications do you foresee for this technology? Also future plans you have for Alfaa UV
A. Purification of air in HVAC systems holds great potential, with the added benefit of reducing energy consumption and reducing ones green footprint. In the hospitality segment, UV in swimming pools and spas is another focus area. Innovative uses of UV for applications such a sterilizing mattresses and other contact surfaces is also gaining popularity.

Q.Who are some of your clients in the hospitality industry?
A. Lalit, JW Marriot, Novotel, ITC, Radisson, Trident, Taj Group, Shangrila, Leela
