A Statement in Solid Wood Flooring!

Although quite contained, the one and only Junckers Display Studio at Greater Kailash in Delhi is a treat for the eyes. This Danish Solid Hardwood flooring brand has set new benchmarks in flooring solutions in India in the last few years. P Krishna Kumar writes, after his recent visit to the studio.

Visiting Junckers Display Studio, located at a premium residential address in South Delhi at Greater Kailash Part II, was beneficial in multiple ways. One, of course, I had a chance to see and understand the sheer variety in terms of species of wood, colours, texture combinations, etc., available with Junckers, the premium solid hardwood flooring brand from Denmark. Another important aspect was the knowledge I received about the different forms of flooring solutions, starting from laminated flooring to engineered wood flooring, etc., from none other than an expert whose entire career was in this field. Suresh Kumar Mansukhani, who steadied and steered Junckers in India as Country Manager for the subcontinent market, is an authority of sorts in this domain.

Junckers entered India market in 1998; when people were fed up with Malaysian and Chinese hardwood products which, despite spending heavy prices on, used to behave unevenly in different weather conditions due to high moisture content. Junckers’ products caught the fancy of high net worth individual (HNI) customers in India because of its superior quality and the clip system of installation. “Moisture content in Junckers products is as low as 8% and is quite controlled. We install two planks with clips. The curvature at the centre allows the clip to drop down uniformly in case of expansion,” Mansukhani says.

Mansukhani also adds that Junckers had its teething issues initially when it worked with a distributor. The distributor was bothered only about high profits rather than promoting the product in the desired way in the market. Taking advantage of the vacuum in the market, engineered wood started replacing hardwood. “People went after engineered wood because it was cheap. Engineered wood was not real wood. The only wood component in engineered wood was the veneer on the top,” he explained.

Junckers got its act together with Mansukhani taking over as the country manager in 2011. Luxury real estate projects like Super Nova, Central Park, are all successfully executed by Junckers. Even the flooring of the President’s House, PM’s House, buildings of military intelligence, RAW, etc., is done by Junckers. “Today, we have a massive project pipeline of 23 lakh sq mt in India,” he states.

Why Junckers?

It is quite easy to install and maintain. “The mess up associated with granite, marble or tiles, does not arise with Junckers. In less than three hours, floors are ready for use after fixing,” Mansukhani asserts. Additionally, one can dismantle and re-install hardwood floors in a different location, something that can’t be done with traditional materials, he said. “In India, our competition is granite and marble,” he says.

Rich Heritage

Junckers has more than eight decades of trust built over the brand, with supplies exceeding 100 million sq mt solid wooden flooring across the globe. Junckers boasts of having their own forests from where they procure trees, and for each tree cut they plant six saplings. The key tree species they use for their flooring products are Oak, Beech, Ash and Maple. “With these woods, we do the staining in order to give it different colours,” he explained.
