Campus Placement: An early shower of blessing

It is not uncommon to see many a student with two or three offer letters in their pockets even before they have written their final exam. This is hospitality industry on the rise.

The idea of campus interviews, selection and placement offers by hospitality corporations in India became a phenomenon from the early eighties. As the industry began to expand and grow nationally, attracting, recruiting, developing and retaining good talent became critical to having a competitive advantage. What began as a simple step by couple of companies became an established practice within a few years.

A privilege to be much appreciated
Every graduating hospitality student ought to be very grateful and deeply appreciative of hospitality employers who are willing to make efforts and seek after to select quality candidates to be part of their professional team to meet their present and prospective needs. Not every profession and industry has been progressive in this aspect in India. Hospitality industry in this respect is in the league of IIMs and IITs.

An event to be well prepared for
Every student needs to be well equipped and prepared for campus interviews well in advance. It is not just crafting an attractive Resume; it also includes creating a well documented portfolio of your achievements, well presented. Also important is preparing with appropriate answers for not only FAQs, but also surprises and creatives. Every student ought to do quality homework on each of the recruiting companies profiles and be well educated with their past, present and future aspects of strategies and plans. Every student also must have clear and concise, well thought out personal expressions of interests and expectations and able to articulate.

A patient affair
Every student ought to know that much patience is required to go through the diversity and variety of procedures and processes depending upon the recruiter's requirements, norms and standards. There could be written tests, group discussions, personal interviews at different levels such as by a panel, line and staff managers, online interviews, offsite interviews, trade and skill tests, etc.

A celebratory period
Institutions have a unique opportunity to showcase the institutional excellence and create a lasting impression on recruiters. A robust system must be built in consultation with all stakeholders with well publicised procedures, norms, schedules, etc., with mutual respect. Nothing should be left to chance. It is the final opportunity to invest in your students and earn their goodwill and create alumni proud of their alma-mater. Appropriate coaching, counseling, guidance must be offered to the students well in advance preparing to seize the opportunity.

A great blessing to the industry
As for the recruiting companies representing various segments and sub sectors of the industry, it is harvest time. Companies have the opportunity to get the best of the bests without having plowed and sown. You are getting apples of gold on platters of silver. Therefore, companies should not take students and institutions for granted and the whole process must be undertaken with utmost solemnity. All promises must be fulfilled and all things done with transparency upholding highest levels of integrity and ethical standards.

Moreover, all stakeholders must have a sense of humility and undertake the campus placement process with wisdom. It should be made a win - win situation for all.

Students who have invested the prime time of their life to learn a particular profession must feel rewarded. Institutions that have laboured hard over the years should earn their laurels. Industry must be able to cultivate its professional competitiveness and intellectual capital from campuses.

In the present scenario of global opportunities, India with its demographic advantages stands to immensely gain from not only national but also international recruiters in a big way. Technological impacts, innovation, startups, etc., have opened up opportunities far more than traditional hospitality under the glittering chandeliers can offer. Industry- institutional engagements can give birth to a host of opportunities and well placed successful alumni can be a backbone to the growth and reputation of institutes.

Even as I write this, many a campus interviews are in progress nationally. Wishing all students a great career success! Actually good placements are a fruit of continual year-round healthy industry institutional engagement.
