The Gourmet Jar - Enhancing our taste buds

Conceptualised by Apeksha Jain, The Gourmet Jar comprises of jams, relishes and preservatives. Jain spoke to Kathryn B K about her innovative creation and her aim to educate Indians and introduce the jam and preservative culture in India.

Brainchild of Apeksha Jain, The Gourmet Jar came into existence in 2012. Jain discovered her love and passion for cooking at a tender age of 15, but never pursued a professional training in cooking or preparing jams and preservatives. The journey to the inception of The Gourmet Jar started in Paris, France, where Jain and her husband stayed for a year. During their brief stay in Paris, they got acquainted with various different flavours of jams, relishes and preservatives. When they shifted back to India, her husband used to crave for the jams he used to have in Paris, especially the banana jam. So, one fine day, Jain thought of trying her hand at preparing the banana jam and she was successful at her first attempt, as it was relished not just by her husband, but also by her relatives and friends. And that is when the idea of experimenting with new, fresh and different flavours stroked her which India is not familiar with. As a result, The Gourmet Jar was born.

Though The Gourmet Jar started in 2012, it was in 2014 Apeksha Jain started it as a serious commercial business. The USP of The Gourmet Jar is that it is completely handmade. Jain says, “We follow the traditional cooking process, we cook in an open flame with a big pan and stir it. Right from stirring to bottling the jams, everything is handmade. The ingredients used in making jams, relishes and preservatives are all natural and pure without any additional colouring or chemicals and we use organic sugar in all our products. All the products of The Gourmet Jar are prepared in Noida.”

Few unique and innovative delicacies by Jain are Banana Rum Jam, Mango Jalapeno Preserve, Spicy Onion Relish, Orange Whiskey Marmalade, Smoked Aubergine Relish, Orange Mustard.

The Gourmet Jars are sold at several hotels like JW Marriott (Juhu), Select Hotels from Oberoi Group, Intercontinental (Chennai), Westin (Pune), W Hotels (Goa), Roseate House (Delhi), Sahara Star (Mumbai), Trident Hotels, Raj Vilas. They are also available online and they also have few stores in Mumbai, Pune and Delhi. The Gourmet Jars are supplied to various major retailers too.

Jain also has expansion plans in her mind. She said, “The Gourmet Jar team would like to expand to other cities where customers do not have access to quality products.” She also added that they are eyeing the international market and would like to export soon.

Jam and preservative culture is foreign to Indians. Most of us think jams are mostly loved by kids and hence, it is their food. But the fact is that, it can be used in many unique and innovative ways to enhance our taste buds. Jain says, “Our objective is to educate people and make them aware that jams and preservatives are not something just for children’s tummy, but can be used in varied and diverse ways. Jams, relishes and preservatives are not just used in toast, but also in bagels, pancakes, waffles, crepes, cakes, pies, smoothies, salad dressings, marinades and even alongside a cheese platter.”

One is absolutely sure to be spoilt for options as there is too much on the salver to pick from; with so many exotic flavours and different and distinctive ways to utilise jams, relishes and preservatives.
