On the occasion of World Health Day, Washington Apple Commission (WAC) has launched the Washington Apple Cook Book in association with Grehlakshmi magazine in New Delhi. The book highlights the health benefits of Washington apples with an array of unique apple recipes from various celebrity chefs and home chefs. It also emphasises on why the original health fruit should be a part of everyone’s daily lifestyle.

The launch was graced among others by John Slette, Senior Attaché for Agricultural Affairs, US Embassy, New Delhi, Rebecca Lyons, International Marketing Director, WAC, Keith Sunderlal, India Representative, WAC.

WAC also organised an exciting cooking competition to showcase the versatility and usage of apples in various dishes. It brought together 10 chefs who presented plated Washington apple recipes. Out of those, four best finalists were chosen to participate in the mystery cookery box challenge.

Speaking to Hospitality Biz, Rebecca Lyons said that India is one of the “top export markets” for Washington Apples and the demand has been growing ever since they started promotions in 2001. From 10 containers initially, she said that they are expecting the demand to grow by 6000 containers this year. WAC will be conducting roadshows in 89 tier II and III cities in India this year to spread awareness about Washington apples, she said.

Lyons said that while they want consumers to consumer apples fresh as a fruit, there is an increasing appetite to use apples as an input in food preparation, which adds another aspect to the product. While retail consumers are their target market in India, Lyons said that it is quite natural that professional chefs prefer Washington Apples in their preparations, since they are quite quality conscious.

Speaking on the occasion, Chef Sabyasachi Gorai said that an apple is a storehouse of nutrition and with that comes good health. “I use Washington apples in salads, finely chopped or grated in yogurt, shakes, smoothies or breakfast cereal along with some nuts. Washington apples have their own natural sugar so there is no need for additional sugar, making the meal deliciously healthy.”

Cargill Foods India, promoters of Leonardo Olive Oil in India, which is one of the largest selling Olive oil brands in India, has launched a 360-degree awareness activation campaign to promote

the health benefits and versatility of Leonardo Olive Oil even to fry, cook and marinate Indian food, on the eve of World Health Day. The company unveiled an all-out promotional campaign – EatBefikr on digital, print, market, and office activation to send out the message that people can indulge in ‘guilt-free’ eating with Leonardo Olive oil, explaining the metabolic health aspects of the Olive oil.

As a step to spread awareness about the adaptability of Olive Oil in Indian recipes, the company also launched a recipe book, Leonardo Olive Oil Health Chronicles’. During the event, Chefs prepared the largest Indian Bhatura using Leonardo Pomace Olive Oil, a rare feat that got an entry into Limca Book of Records. The giant Bhatura measured 4-feet-2-inch in diameter. The feat was aimed at breaking the popular belief that Olive Oil is not conducive for deep frying.

Speaking on the occasion, Neelima Burra, Chief Marketing Officer, Cargill Foods India said that the objective is to deliver health and nutrition to the people through their products. In the Cargill Foods portfolio, she said that Olive oil is a “value portfolio” than a “volume portfolio”. Leonardo Olive Oil is part of the niche Health & Wellness portfolio of Cargill Foods, she said. “Leonardo Olive Oil cooks at 1/3rd the quantity as compared to other refined oils, while keeping the taste and palatability high. The campaign on the World Health Day focuses on the benefits that Leonardo Olive Oil brings to improve overall metabolic health. The world’s largest Bhatura is a feat to demonstrate as perfect oil for Indian cooking,” she said.
