Although Malbec is a French grape by origin, it was in Argentina that the Malbec flourished and blossomed. Almost forgotten in France, Malbec found a special environment in the Andean region in Argentina. Andean mountains are spread across South America. Argentina is the Southern most country of America, where the climate is temperate. In this region, particularly in Mendoza, the weather is cool and dry, the soil is very fertile and therefore, this region became one of the most ideal lands to cultivate grapes. Since the cultivation of Malbec grapes are in the Andean mountains at a height of 8,000 – 9,000 ft., the taste of the wines keep changing at different height levels. Malbec wines attract people from around the world because of its supreme quality and taste.

Malbec wine production is almost organic and the reason behind this is the scant rainfall in Mendoza. Due to little rainfall, there is no insect creeping on to the crops and hence the need to spray pesticides does not arise which is what makes it more organic and natural.

“Malbec wines are highly consumed in Brazil, US, European countries and China. But the Argentinean wineries are now interested to enter a market like India because of its potentiality. India as of now may not be on Argentina’s priority list, but it is a very important market for Argentina,” said Alejandro Zothner Meyer, Acting Consul General for Argentina. Few Malbec wines are already present in the India but the best Malbec wines are yet to enter India market, said Meyer.

Malbec wines cater to all sections of the society. It can be consumed by the middle class as well as the premium class.

Meyer informs, “Our work in The Consulate General is to promote Argentinean wines. We are facilitators. We facilitate contacts and the rest is done by the agriculture business sector in Argentina that is run by the private sector.”

Mendoza is famous for the Malbec wines and is gaining popularity among tourists. Apart from various adventure sports at Mendoza, this region is attracting tourists for learning about wines and its cultivation.

Last year 7000 Indians visited Argentina and about 15-20% growth in visitors is seen every year, added Meyer.

France had long forgotten Malbec, but when it came to Argentina, it took it as its home and Argentina too welcomed Malbec with open arms. And today, Malbec wines are among the most sought after premium wines in the world.
