In order to check the menace of unscrupulous travel facilitators in India’s Medical and Wellness travel sector, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India will bring in guidelines for registration of Medical Travel facilitators soon. The information about registered Medical Travel facilitators will be flagged online by the Ministry so that people who visit India for Medical and Wellness requirements are not fleeced by unauthorized ‘touts’.

The issue of unauthorized “touts” bringing “bad name” to the country was flagged by prominent doctors including Dr Naresh Trehan at the recently held third National Medical and Wellness Tourism Board meeting. Even Dr Mahesh Sharma, Union Minister for Tourism & Culture also conceded the prevalence of unauthorized “facilitators” tarnishing the image of the destination.

Later, speaking to Hospitality Biz, Rashmi Verma, Secretary-Tourism, Government of India said that the department is working on creating a pool of registered Medical travel facilitators to contain this menace. “We are looking at something in the lines of what tour operators and travel agents do for their tour packages. Certain parameters for registration of such Medical travel facilitators will be set and registration will be made compulsory,” she said.

She also said that the Ministry in consultation with the Ministry of External Affairs will explore potential of “government to government tie ups” with countries which support and fund medical treatments for their citizens in overseas destinations. “This potential exists in many African countries,” she said.
