Minister of MoFPI urges countries and global companies to partner in India’s food security story

Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Minister of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has urged developed nations and global companies in the food sector to partner in India’s earnest endeavour to reduce food wastage so that not only the country achieves food security but at the same become the food factory of the world. The Minister was speaking at the curtain raiser of the maiden World Food India scheduled at its aegis in Delhi between November 3 and 5.

 Touted as the largest food event in the history of modern India, World Food India 2017 will have 40,000 sqm of exhibition area with over 800 global and domestic exhibitors. As per the organizers, there will be strong international participation from 30 countries with 18 high level delegations visiting the event for B2B and B2G interactions. 28 States of India will showcase their products and present opportunities for investment at the 3-day event, which will be held at India Gate and Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.

50 Global CEOs are expected to attend the event in Delhi.

The Minister said that it is in the interest of the world that country like India which represents one-sixth of the population becomes self-sufficient in terms of food and the food wastage happening in India is curtailed, so that it can be used to feed the hungry not only in India and other parts of the world.

Outlining policy environment in the country, Badal said that the government has taken slew of positive measures to reduce barriers of entry and facilitate ease of doing business. She said that 100% FDI is allowed in the food processing sector in the country. “Now the world can come and join hands to maximize the yields and improve infrastructure so that wastage is reduced,” she said. India, she said is a US$600 billion retail sector where 70% is food retail. The same is expected to treble in the next three years.

She said that India can afford to take best of technologies in the world, make in India and export to the world.

Germany, Denmark, and Japan are partner countries at World Food India 2017 and Italy and Netherlands are Focus countries.

There will be special pavilions including the Food Street, curated by renowned Chef Sanjeev Kapoor at the event. Speaking to Hospitality Biz, Chef Kapoor said that the Culinary theatre at the World Food India will see top chefs from India and the Michelin Star Chefs from overseas sharing the platform. He said that although the initiative is by Processing Industry, World Food India has the potential to become a food show like any acclaimed food show in the world, to make India a Food Destination in future.

The curtain raiser was attended by Ambassadors of countries like Netherlands, Japan, Denmark, Poland, Latvia, etc.
