HBI Staff | Mumbai

As part of its week-long visit to India from November 06-11 for the India Business Mission 2017, the Government of South Australia launched a two-year wine education program in India. The program is aimed at boosting exposure of South Australian premium wines, wine regions and winemaking expertise in the Indian market.

The program, to be delivered in Mumbai and Delhi, will focus on educating wine influencers, sommeliers, wine writers and wine professionals about the quality and variety of South Australia’s wines, given that the State is one of the leading wine-producing areas in Australia and Adelaide, the State’s capital, was recently named a Great Wine Capital of the World.

The program will give the Indian market insights into South Australian wineries and the diverse portfolio of varietals, styles and price points to meet current and future demand from Indian wine consumers. The initiative by the Government of South Australia indicates the growing interest of the State in the Indian market. The program was launched for the first time in India in Mumbai on November 6th by Minister for Investment and Trade Martin Hamilton-Smith MP.

Speaking at the launch event in Mumbai last evening, Martin Hamilton-Smith, Minister for Investment and Trade said, “South Australia is home to Adelaide, one of the nine Great Wine Capitals of the world, and 18 other distinct wine regions including the famous Barossa and McLaren Vale. As a destination renowned globally for its wine, we are keen to create a more in-depth understanding of South Australian wines in the Indian market towards which we have launched the wine education program. We certainly hope that our efforts to build a richer understanding of South Australian wines in India through this program will go a long way in enhancing the perception and appreciation for our wines here.”

As a part of the launch of the program several South Australian wine brands and companies such as 1847 Wines Chateau Yaldara, Doc Adams Wines, Negotiants Australia, the Great Australian Wine Company and Aus Indo Trading Co, were represented. Also present was Brian Smedley from the South Australian Wine Industry Association and Catherine Sayer, CEO of Food South Australia who engaged with key influencers from the food and beverage fraternity in India to briefly introduce the history and portfolio of wines under their brands. Invitees also had a chance to taste premium wines including those Jacob’s Creek and Penfolds, which are renowned and popular wine brands in India.

The wine education program will be conducted over two years and will focus on educating wine influencers, sommeliers, wine writers and wine professionals about the quality and variety of South Australian wine. The program will give the Indian market insight into South Australian wineries and the diverse portfolio of varietals, styles and price points to meet current and future demand from Indian wine consumers. The program will also be launched in Delhi at the Australian High Commission on November 9, later in the week.
