The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered the setting up of a joint inspection committee comprising officers of the tourism department, Pollution Control Board, Sub-divisional Magistrate of the area and scientists from the Himalayan Institute to inspect almost 1,700 hotels, homestays, lodges operating in the Kullu-Manali belt and report on the violations in terms of environmental norms. The Tribunal bench headed by Chairman, Justice Swatanter Kumar also asked the authorities concerned to act strictly on all such units in the belt which operates without valid licences and registrations.

While all hotels will be inspected by the joint committee, the Bench has asked to inspect on a priority those hotels which have rooms above 25. The committee will inspect primarily on factors including the source of water in those hotel units, the solid waste and sewage treatment processes and systems being followed, etc.

The organised tourism and hospitality industry has welcomed the decision of the Green Tribunal. Speaking to Hospitality Biz, Sanjay Sood, President of Hotel & Restaurant Association of Northern India (HRANI) while welcoming the decision of the Tribunal supported “strict action against those who flout rules”. He conceded there are hotels operating without proper waste management systems in the area. “They channel their solid waste to the rivers and water bodies blatantly,” he said. He said that they are largely the unorganised players.
