Oberoi, ITC may bid for Taj Mansingh

Saturday, December 16, 2017, 13:00 Hrs  [IST]

According to a report in the Times of India, the capital may witness an intense battle among India’s biggest hospitality players over the prime Taj Mansingh that New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is bidding out. While the Tata’s Group Taj Hotels would go all out to retain its flagship property in Delhi, other big chains are examining the prospects of bidding for the Lutyens’ zone hotel.

The Oberoi Group executive chairman P R S Oberoi said, “We received the tender documents concerning Taj Mansingh two days ago and are examining it. We will then decide whether we should bid for it or not.”

A spokesperson for ITC Hotels, which runs Maurya, also said “evaluation is on” regarding the bidding.

Industry sources said the other big hospitality players that may bid for Taj Mansingh include — K Raheja Group, which runs big hotels in and around Mumbai like Renaissance, Powai; J W Marriott at Juhu and Sahar; Four Points by Sheraton, Vashi; Marriott Whitefield, Bengaluru; and The Westin, Hyderabad.

“The other bidders for the hotel could be privately owned hotel asset company SAMHI that runs 25 hotels under brands like Courtyard by Marriott, Sheraton, Hyatt Regency, Hyatt Place, Fairfield by Marriott and Four Points by Sheraton. And another biggie, Apeejay Surrendra Group that runs Park Hotels could be a contender,” said a hospitality industry insider on condition of anonymity.

To keep non-serious players out, NDMC would allow only groups already running five-star hotels in India to bid for Taj Mansingh. Its other strict bidding conditions include groups that have at least 500 rooms in not more than five 5-star properties and have a sizeable net worth and operational income from hotels.

The Taj Group feels its impeccable record of running the property should also be borne in mind by NDMC while deciding on the bidding.
