Budget Allocation for Tourism in FY 2018-19 sees more than 20% increase

Budget allocation for Civil Aviation sees three-fold increase

The Union Budget presented by Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley in the Parliament yesterday proposed an estimated budget allocation of INR 2,150 cr for the Tourism Ministry. The allocation is about more than 20% increase compared to revised estimate of INR 1,775 cr in the last budget. On the other hand, the budget allocation for the Civil Aviation has seen a three-fold increase from INR 2,702 cr to INR 6,602 cr.  

Major proposals in the Union Budget this year is the proposal to  convert 10 identified and prominent tourist destinations into iconic and model destinations by adopting a holistic approach of development with the support of the private sector. The Finance Minister also proposed schemes to enhance the visitor experience at 110 Model Monuments under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) under the National Heritage City Augmentation scheme of the government.

Among other proposals that he touched upon in his budget speech include scheme to promote Seaplane both for tourism as well as to handle emergency situations. The Finance Minister also proposed establishment of Ropeways as part of improving infrastructure.

On the aviation infrastructure in the country, the Finance Minister said that the government will enhance the airport capacity to handle one billion trips a year. He said that 56 unserved airports and 31 unserved helipads have been already activated under the Regional Connectivity Scheme of the government and operations have been started on 16 such places. He said that Airport Authority of India has 124 airports under its jurisdiction.

From the total allocation for tourism, North Eastern region will get a share of INR 203 cr. The allocation for Ministry of Culture has also seen marginal increase from INR 2,843 cr to INR 2,866 cr in the budget 2018-19.
