Dr Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State for Culture (I/C), Government of India said that tourist facilities at more than 100 identified heritage monuments in the country will be upgraded and set at par with international standards within one year’s time. He said that apart from the 10 iconic tourist destinations being proposed to be developed with world class standards and infrastructure in the recent Union Budget, facilities at all the identified ‘Adarsh Smarak’ (ideal heritage monuments) will also be upgraded in next one year’s time. The Minister was speaking at the National Conference & Awards on Tourism & Hospitality organised by ASSOCHAM in Delhi.

He said that heritage conservation is a major focus of the government and this is the reason why government is taking measures to decongest iconic monuments like the Taj Mahal. He said that “overcrowding” by visitors has been identified as a major issue in a study conducted by National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) and limiting the ticket timing and putting a premium on tickets for visiting the mausoleum are part of the recommendations of the report.

Talking about the tourism sector and its potential, Dr Sharma said that while India has the demographic dividend of having the largest young population base, that strength will fade away in the next 20 years unless we utilise that strength in a purposeful manner. Tourism is a sun rise sector which can employ a lot of young people, he said. He said that it is important that a holistic impact study of the tourism sector is done.

Subhash Goyal, Chairman, Assocham’s Council on Tourism and Hospitality, Ravneet Kaur, CMD, ITDC, Vikas Rustogi, Deputy Director General (Tourism), Government of India, among others were present at the occasion.
