Asmita Mukherjee | Hyderabad

The Dream Cakes is a home-grown cake designing studio that renders realistic-looking sugar flowers and other unique cake decorations. Founded by Ashwini Sarabhai in 2006, The Dream Cakes focuses on teaching the best cake designs through an online platform, in-person workshops, and demos. The academy has trained around 10K+ students across the globe, while also launching India’s first online platform for cake baking and decorating in 2012. Asmita Mukherjee spoke with Sarabhai to understand her dream behind starting The Dream Cakes.

What was the idea behind your academy, The Dream Cakes?

The idea behind The Dream Cakes was to educate, evolve and unleash the untapped potential of passionate artists in the cake baking and cake decorating space. Initially, The Dream Cakes was instrumental in educating students via in-person mode. The online platform of this academy was born to counter the challenges, which the students faced while traveling to our location. The company launched India’s first online platform for cake baking and decorating in 2012, long before the pandemic hit us and made it the new normal. This platform has led thousands of home chefs to start with their entrepreneurial journeys and make it count!
Our academy engages over 10K+ students onboard across different mediums of Sugar Art, ranging from cake baking to cake decorations.

Kindly tell us about some successful alumni of The Dream Cakes.

Many of The Dream Cakes alumni are successful artists and teachers as well. Out of the multitude, we would like to mention 2 of them here:

One of them would be Jignya Thakkar. Based out of Pune, she started with her own business named ‘The Chokolade Fantasie’. She started her journey of chocolates and cakes with The Dream Cakes, when she was in her final years of engineering. She has learned a lot from us in the area of cakes and has shown her niche in the area of chocolates as well. I am honoured to be her mentor and it makes me proud to see her as one of the guest tutors in our academy.
Another notable alumnus would be Ruchi Gupta. Based out of Delhi, she started her journey a few years ago with an identity of her own, called - ‘Ruchi Gupta Cookery Classes’. She is a very hard-working and talented artist. She attended the sessions at The Dream Cakes for the first time in an online format and with her practice and hard work, she has achieved tremendous success. She also conducts classes herself and is a good teacher, who known to many.

How has the response been since you started the academy?

It has been an endearing experience so far and the response has been phenomenal. When we started the academy, not many of the students/artists knew the basic types of cakes or even fondant in the space of cake art. We, at The Dream Cakes introduced fondant designer cakes to our market and they were an instant hit, as people wanted something different and personalised at that point. Seeing that, many folks were interested in learning the cake art as well, so we started teaching it in many workshops in an offline mode in 2009. Students well appreciated the initiative and many travelled from other cities/states and abroad as well.
At The Dream Cakes, we always try and upgrade the academy with innovations and this made us launch the online platform for the ones who couldn’t travel all the way. The ease of virtual training sessions, offerings that could be utilised from the comfort of their homes, and the whole awareness and educating part, is very well appreciated among our students and artists around the globe.

What are your future plans for The Dream Cakes?

We aim to reach everyone who is passionate for learning cake art. Learning is not so challenging these days, as the resources are available around us. All we need is intent to up-skill and improve ourselves. We as an e-learning platform are also evolving with the changing times and have some planned enhancements for a better learning experience for our students. We are looking forward to launching them by early next year catering to students across the globe.  With an online mode of educating the students, the company aims at spreading its wings as high as the sky.
